MPEG-1 (M1V) is a multimedia format that is published as the ISO/IEC-1172 standard. It is an older format that relies on lossy compression, and it was designed to compress VHS and CD video files. Of all the formats that use lossy compression, M1V is the most widely-compatible with players, software, and hardware.

 

How to open an M1V file?

When opening an M1V file, it is best to use VLC media player. This media player can play across many operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Unix.

 

If there are problems opening an M1V file, then try the following. Verify the player software is most current version by visiting the player’s web site and searching for MPEG-1 video file updates. On Windows, ensure the correct application associates with the file by following these instructions. If all else fails, make sure the file is not infected with malware by scanning it with VirusTotal.

Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) is a compressed audio file that is often used for speech coding. The AMR speech codec focuses on narrowband signals, which makes it ideal for voice recordings and radio. It is used regularly in Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

 

How to open an AMR file?

Since AMR files are often used on mobile phones, including for MMS messaging, most 3G mobile devices are able to open them. AMR also opens with VLC media player, QuickTime, RealPlayer, and Xine.

 

Other software, such as the free audio-editing software Audacity, can open AMR files. Download audacity easily at SourceForge.net. Because AMR files are heavily compressed and focused on narrowband signals, they are not suitable for music files.
